Many ladies say that you should dress up for the job you want, not the one you have, and it’s true. Ambition is not a sin, and we all want more privileges… and responsibilities. But your usual office lady doesn’t have a massive budget for Armani pantsuits like ones Hillary Clinton wears. This shouldn’t be a problem, though. Every leader started small in democracy. At least, they should. You can try to match these power women with your own style, modeled on them, or adjusted to your own style. Another old adage is that you never have a second chance to make a first impression.
Build up your formal wardrobe with responsible, staple businesswear that can give you a lot of mileage. Start with a nice white or grey blouse, and build up. Have a couple of hard, edged blazers or suit jackets with clearly defined shoulders, and wear them. Use neutral colors so you could wear them with everything… but red as a powerful, vivid color should not be underestimated. Other warm colors aren’t that much powerful… and few women could handle an orange pantsuit.
If you want to spend more money on your suits, wait with brand names – you could get a couple of reasonably-priced woman suits and instead have them tailored. A tailor can narrow the waist, slim down the legs, and in general make a cheap suit jacket for women look like a model of elegance. Think of the prestige that comes with having a personal tailor… or at least a tailor.
Another effective way to increase your prestige is jewelry – and some of it can be ostentatious, as long as they’re singular. A strand of pearls or fake pearls like Maggie Thatcher used to favor is very feminine… and also very officious. Some other accessories are massive handbags or smaller ones, like bracelets.
High heels can be great equalizer. They add a couple of centimeters, and make you more confident, both in your own eyes and according to other. Many women also enjoy conversation-starting shoes, which helps in networking. It’s not that taller women do better, but the self-confidence might be worth it.
The confidence is a part of you. If you have a cashmere cardigan that makes you feel more responsible and hard-working, by all means ignore these advice and wear it. What makes a woman powerful is power – and this means inner power as well.
